"The Purpose of the Cross"
March, 2005

In a few weeks, we will once again focus specifically on the death of Jesus Christ on the cross and then His resurrection. Like Christmas, the Easter focus comes back to a central theme. The theme is: Jesus' death and resurrection provide for our salvation and the forgiveness of our sin. The power of His sacrifice on the cross is so important to our faith. Jesus was God’s final sacrifice for the atonement of our sin. God has no other plan whereby you

and I may be saved. May I encourage you to seek Jesus with all your heart and be totally committed to Him? Have you asked for His forgiveness of your own sin?

Recently, I read the following prayer from an anonymous Nigerian Christian. "God in heaven, you have helped my life to grow like a tree. Now something has happened. Satan, like a bird, has carried in one twig of his own choosing after another. Before I knew it, he had built a dwelling place and was living in it. Tonight, my Father, I am throwing out both the bird and the nest." Perhaps something like this has happened to you. Perhaps you know Satan has quietly, cunningly prepared an unwanted place in your life. Your question is, “What can I do about it?”

You see, there is a reason for the cross! Sin and Satan’s attacks are the reason. Jesus Christ was the sacrifice for sin on the cross. The purpose of the cross is that His shed blood was and is to set us free. No more living in bondage and continual struggle. By His Power, Jesus' power, throw out the bird and the nest. Command Satan under the blood of Jesus Christ to be gone. Resist the devil, the Bible says, and he will flee from you. You cannot resist on your own power; it must be done in the power of Christ and the shadow of the cross.

The message of this simple prayer I shared is that the Nigerian Christian realized how the enemy had snuck in and was controlling his life. He simply turned to God and asked for forgiveness and deliverance. Note, he took the initiative to realize his plight and determined with God’s help he could throw out the bird and the nest. You can too! Is this the day of your deliverance from Satan and sin? It is your choice.

Prayerfully Serving You,
